Scientific mediation training course in Cluj-Napoca

The Cluj Cultural Center in partnership with Universcience, Paris organizes during the Romania – France season 2019, a scientific mediation course. The course aims to develop the practical skills of communicating science to a broad audience.

The course will be held from 14 to 15 May 2019 in Cluj-Napoca and will be addressed to 15 participants. Led by Catherine OUALIAN, a French specialist in scientific communication, the course will be run in English.

Entries are to be made by May 5th by filling out the attached form. Participation is free and the 15 participants will be selected based on the submitted documentation.

The aim of the course is to prepare participants to design and facilitate activities meant to familiarize the general public with science and specific themes that are scientifically addressed.

How to introduce science to broad public? Why choose one method or another for scientific communication? How to attract and retain public attention for scientific information? The Scientific Mediation Training Workshop aims to answer these questions and prepare the participants to conceive a scientific mediation program for the general public.

The workshop will focus on developing practical skills in:

  • Event moderation and co-creation with various actors
  • Developing knowledge activities
  • Building presentation techniques and \”staging\” a theme for different audiences
  • Using other media and communication channels

The course is addressed to:

  • Young professionals from diverse scientific fields (elementary sciences, social sciences, etc.)
  • Students, scientific researchers, PhD students, journalists, experts, practitioners in different scientific fields
  • People passionate about science and who are interested in communicating information and scientific knowledge to a wide audience, especially the young audience

Specific requirements:

  • Minimum age: 20 years
  • Fluent English (understanding and speaking)
  • Availability to attend both course days (14 – 15 May 2019)
  • Availability to participate as a facilitator at an event organized between June 22 and 23 in Cluj-Napoca aimed at bringing science closer to Cluj. This requirement is not an elimination criterion.

Catherine Oualian is a certified trainer of the Mediation School at Universcience (Paris, France). After a PhD in neuroscience and training in science communication project management, Catherine Oualian worked as an explainer. She was then project manager and, afterwards, director of a scientific communication association focused on social inclusion and public participation. Catherine Oualian then joined the training center \”Ecole de la médiation\” where she coordinates and conducts training for science explainers.

The course is part of the project ”Towards a participatory approach of the local public: mutualisation of knowledge in scientific mediation”, organized during the Romania-France season 2019.

Course participants will be encouraged to maintain a collaborative interest in the STEAM (Science, Technology, Engineering, Art, Mathematics) education and promotion projects that the Cluj Culture Center will organize in the coming period.

The training course is organized by Cluj Cultural Centre, within the Academy of Change program, with the support of the Cluj-Napoca City Hall and Cluj County Council. Partners: Banca Transilvania and URSUS.
