160 scientists from 30 countries applied for the residency programme within the European project of art and science Studiotopia. The residency programme aims to encourage scientists to exchange ideas, knowledge and methodologies with international visual artists. Results, developed concepts, research material or artworks generated during STUDIOTOPIA residencies will be exhibited in partnering venues across Europe.
Cluj Cultural Centre hosts two residences in collaboration with the artists Alexandra Pirici and Ciprian Mureșan, who will work with the following scientists:
Paco Calvo – Professor of Philosophy of Science, and Principal Investigator of MINTLab (Minimal Intelligence Lab) at the University of Murcia, Spain. His research interests range broadly within the cognitive sciences, with special emphasis on ecological psychology, embodied cognitive science, and plant intelligence. Paco Calvo will collaborate with the artist Alexandra Pirici.
Sanneke Stigter – Assistant Professor in Conservation and Restoration of Cultural Heritage at the University of Amsterdam. Her research interests lie in conservation theory, museum practice, oral history and artist participation, with a special focus on conceptual art, photoworks and installation art.
Sanneke Stigter will collaborate in the project with the artist Ciprian Mureșan.
Sven Dupré – Professor of Art History, Science and Technology at Utrecht University (History and History of Art) and at the University of Amsterdam (Conservation & Restoration). His research interests range from researching the technical history of art to the field of restoration and conservation of art objects. Sven Dupré will collaborate with the artist Ciprian Mureșan.

About the artists invited by Cluj Cultural Centre within the Studiotopia residences:
Alexandra Pirici is an artist with a background in dance and choreography who works undisciplined, across different mediums. Her works have been exhibited within the decennial art exhibition Skulptur Projekte Munster 2017, the Venice Biennale -‐ Romanian Pavilion at the 55th edition, Tate Modern London, New Museum – New York, Art Basel Messeplatz, The 9th Berlin Biennale, Manifesta 10, Centre Pompidou -‐ Paris, Museum Ludwig Cologne, the Van Abbemuseum Eindhoven, Russian Museum St. Petersburg, Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, HAU Theatre Berlin, Museum of Modern Art Warsaw, Chicago Architecture Biennale, among many others.
Ciprian Mureșan lives and works in Cluj, Romania. Mureșan works with a variety of media, from drawing, video and objects to photography and books. In his works he explores, salvages and re-contextualizes historical, social and cultural references in order to unveil the complexity of everyday life and the conditions of viewing history. In 2009, he represented Romania at the 53rd International Art Exhibition of the Venice Biennale. His works have been exhibited in SMAK Ghent, Centre Pompidou, Paris; Venice Biennale; Ludwig Museum, Budapest; Tate Modern, London; Contemporary Art Center, Geneva; n.b.k. – Neuer Berliner Kunstverein, Berlin; New Museum, New York.
STUDIOTOPIA is an initiative of eight European cultural institutions: BOZAR (BE – coordinator), GLUON (BE), Ars Electronica (AT), Laznia Center of Modern Art (PL), Onassis Cultural Center (Gr), Vrije Universiteit Amsterdam (NL) and Labor (SP).
