The Urban Innovation Unit

The Cluj-Napoca Urban Innovation Unit is a research and development programme, bringing together ideas, knowledge and resources from the civil society, the academic sector, the cultural sector, the business sector and the public administration to propose alternative solutions to the city’s strategic challenges.

Developed in partnership with the Centre for Innovation and Civic Imagination of the Municipality of Cluj-Napoca, the Urban Innovation Unit is focused on R&D projects in urban mobility, future of work, housing and urban resilience.

In 2022, the Urban Innovation Unit will be fully transferred to the Cluj-Napoca City Hall.

This year, we are working on voluntary reduction mechanisms of private car use, in favor of other transportation modes. Together with Cluj-Napoca Municipality we want to increase with 10% the number of students that make use of their free transportation pass for public transit during October-December 2018.

We also support measures that help us understand how current traffic conditions shape our decision-making process for a transportation mode. We launched the Mobility Pact, a working group that gathers specialists from the local public administration, companies and universities, interested in using traffic-related big data available at city level, for civic projects which can improve the quality of life for Cluj residents. The report of the Mobility Pact will be available in September 2018.

We facilitate the exchange of good practices in urban innovation in the framework of our yearly conference- Cluj 2.1-Urban Dialogues, which will take place in Cluj-Napoca between 4-6 November 2018.
