The works of two artists from Cluj included in the Europe at Home project

Europe at Home is a project that brings together European artistic perspectives in the field of photography and literature, related to this exceptional and unprecedented situation that we all live. At the invitation of Faro, a candidate city for the title of European Capital of Culture in Portugal and a member of the Culture Next network we initiated in 2017, we joined the project, proposing two artists to represent the city of Cluj: Gabriel Aldea (Komiti) and Alexandra Felseghi.

Gabriel Aldea is a photographer, and together with the Komiti team he created a collaboration project with illustrators from Cluj-Napoca: KOMITI ✕ ILLUSTRATORS. The photos taken with the empty city were completed by illustrators, who animated well-known places in the city with colorful characters and scenes.

Alexandra Felseghi’s text, Alone / Together or anonymous between four walls was created within the Artists Together movement that we launched together with the Romanian Health Observatory with the support of Banca Transilvania, to involve artists in the fight against Covid-19.

The Europe at Home project is still open to cities that want to join. To participate, each city can contribute with photography and literature works on the project website – www.europeathome.eu.

Europe at Home is also open to citizens from all over Europe who, through social networks, can participate in the project by showing their perspective on this moment and publicly sharing their photos using the hashtag #EuropeAtHome.

Initially, the invitation to join the project was launched by Faro to a group of cities that place culture as one of their main axes of development, to interpret this particular moment in history through the artists’ photographs and literary authors’ texts.

Although many of the cities involved are linked to the title of European Capital of Culture, the Europe at Home project aims to be an open movement that seeks to involve any city in Europe and its artists.

Culture Next is a network founded in 2017 by current and former candidates to the European Capital of Culture title, which aims to support cities to implement culture-led urban development programmes and strategies, building on the experiences, participatory processes and collaborations established during the ECoC bid. Cluj Cultural Centre hosts the Secretariat of the network since 2017.
