Terrarium is an exchange project that has been set up between Universcience in France and Cluj Cultural Center, as part of the France-Romania season.
The first part of this project consisted in a FabLab residence of two Romanian Biologists from the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca, who, together with the Carrefour Numérique team, worked on building up a fully automated terrarium.
Now the Terrarium is in place and we are able to check & register the parameters of soil & air humidity, air temperature & ventilation as well as the light-intake of the terrarium, with an automatized system for watering, heating/cooling, lighting, and air flow.
The system is also used to study different aspects of the Terrarium Eco-System. How do plants affect each other, what is the correlation between humidity, temperature, and light intake, what are the optimal humidity, temperature and light values for favorable plant growth?
Now the project reached the second step which is concerned with setting up an application for controlling the Terrarium remotely. The temperature dropping and the humidity decreasing over a longer period of time when we’re out of town could be dramatic for the plants. Join us for free and be one of the ten Hackathon Heroes that make this Terrarium 0.1 become reality!
And it’s not an exaggeration when we’re calling out for heroes, because the Terrarium 0.1 App will save so many plant lives. Just imagine that plants will never hate us again for taking that long holiday because we’ll be able to give them the care they need over the phone or computer.
To make sure this will actually work, we’ll need you, Heroes, to be available on 21st & 22nd June, with at least 2 of these super skills on you:
– C++ language on Arduino board
– Python language on a computer
– experience in plant science or plant care
– the enthusiasm, that doesn’t find teamwork challenging
– the love for plants
– the willing to give your best as fast as you can (for a cool cause)
– your laptop (is a must)
We’ll have four great mentors prepared to help & unite the great minds present at the Terrarium 0.1 Hackathon:
– two specialists in Biology and Plants: Prof. Univ. Dr. Corina Cătană and Gabriel Verde from the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine Cluj-Napoca
– Automation & App development experts: Thierry Dasse and Răzvan Batin
Corina Cătană – is a plant biotechnologist at heart and the Head of the Center of Biodiversity and Preservation, ICHAT, USAMV (The University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine of Cluj-Napoca)
Gabriel Verde – 3rd-year student at the University of Agricultural Sciences and Veterinary Medicine, he currently works on his bachelor degree, searching for automated solutions for terrariums, vivariums, and aquariums.
Thierry Dasse – is a Fab manager at the Carrefour Numérique, Universcience Paris, ICT explainer and events project manager.
Răzvan Batin – Software architect experienced in data processing and cloud-based solutions, passionate about plant care and biology.
